Huddersfield Town have produced a handful of top-level footballers through its youth ranks in the last couple of decades. That handful of players isn’t enough but I have a strong suspicion that over the next few years that will change for the better.
What gives me the right to be so optimistic about the fortunes of my club? Since 2008 there have been immeasurable efforts by the club to function as a self-sustaining business. Something which many clubs crave to be, but rarely achieve. In 2008 Dean Hoyle first took a seat at Huddersfield Town’s boardroom table.
As the self-proclaimed steward of Huddersfield Town, Hoyle addressed a critical part of the club’s blueprint for future longevity. The club’s youth set-up urgently required a fresh and innovative approach as well as significant investment.
The club gained Academy status and put forward the principles that would reap future rewards. Why is the Academy so important to my club? Academy status gives the club the strength to attract talent from beyond its local borders, which can be nurtured to their football philosophy.
In any business the development of staff is essential and needs to follow the business’ own aspirations. If a club aspires to be a Premiership club then it needs a youth policy good enough to produce Premiership players. Sometimes a player’s ability will exceed the level of the current first-team.
The most recent example for Huddersfield Town has been Jack Hunt, who moved to Crystal Palace in September 2013. Hunt joined the club’s Academy as a 9-year old before making his first team debut in January 2011.
If the fee of £2m that was received for Hunt isn’t used to balance the books it can be reinvested back into the youth system. And the process starts again for more individuals. The Academy of any club is a long and patient business, which is something of a contradiction to the short term success that is measured on the pitch.
It will have numerous players at different stages of their production cycle. All of which needs to be managed not just by coaches on the pitch but by the executives off it. The man responsible for the ongoing development of Town’s success is Ross Wilson, who coordinates the club’s scouting network and works tenaciously on attracting new players both to the Academy and the first team.
Fast-forward to February 2014 and Town’s Under 21s and Under 18s are topping both of their respective divisions in the Professional Development League. Both teams are setting their divisions alight and making observers sit-up and take notice. The Under 21s are unbeaten in 13 games this season and the Under 18s have just knocked Man United out of the Youth Cup to progress to the quarter finals.
Under the club’s current stewardship, the existing strategy and having the right people in the right places you might understand why I am so optimistic for the future.
The future is bright, the future is blue and white.

Well our season more or less came to an end yesterday as we secured our place in the Championship.Have we progressed from last season?well we are safe before the last game unlike last year so if you can call this progress then yes. After a great start playing tippy tappy football and getting the results to match and our main striker on form all looked well. Then reality kicked in as we had in hose fighting players heads turned with so called bigger clubs coming in for jv .The other teams sussing us out and bullying our players of the ball.knowing we were trying to pass our way out of defense with players that just cant do it.Robins i reserve judment on as i think he has moved the club on as the results with the youth teams prove but it has not worked in the 1st team squad. So next season will be make or break for him as he will have his own chosen players (we hope).Great away days were had and more to come next year home games well less said the better.ON to next season with eternal hope as always.UP THE MIGHTY TERRIERS!!!
